Civil War Collectibles

Civil War collectibles, memorabilia, and souveniers ideal for the collector, reenactor, history buff, and all who are interested in this period of our nation's history.

Just in time for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. These items make great gifts!

NOTE: Many of these items are original antique pieces and it is important to keep in mind that they are over 150 years old. Each has seen many owners and has been handled many times over the course of its existence and as a result the piece has developed a history of its own. Short edge splits, foxing, discoloration, etc. are all things to expect on items of this type. They rarely distract from the piece and often add to the overall character of the item. Keep in mind when you receive your item that you are not handling a modern copy, you are holding a piece of history, an item that has been around for a very long time and will, with proper care, be around for a long time to come.

SaddleMCBrownLSide_SM
$495.00

This ORIGINAL McClellan saddle appears to be a Second Pattern M1904 artillery saddle. All the rigging - quarterstraps, saddle safe, stirrup straps, stirrup hoods, and coat straps - have been replaced with quality leather and proper hardware. This saddle is ready to ride.

The Second Pattern M1904 featured adjustable side rigging allowing for forward, backward, and height adjustment of the quarterstrap safes and consequently the girth on the horse. The quarterstraps are threaded through brass halter squares. The safes are rounded and backed by sheepskin. The underside of the saddle is backed by sheepskin as well.

The six coat straps are rolled in 'pigtail' fashion. "D" rings on the pommel and cantle of the saddle indicate that this is an artillery saddle.

A modern mohair cinch is included.

This ORIGINAL McClellan saddle appears to be a Second Pattern M1904 artillery saddle.

Inspector's initials stamp is visible on many of the leather pieces, such as the saddle safe. Double thickness hooded stirrups still carry the embossed "US". The six coat straps are rolled in 'pigtail' fashion. "D" rings on the pommel and cantle of the saddle indicate that this is an artillery saddle.

The original-to-this-saddle iron stirrups are available instead of the hooded stirrups. An original horsehair girth, not original to this saddle is available for an additional price.

Since the saddle is all original leather it is NOT recommended for riding due to the aging and dryness of the leather. This saddle is an excellent display saddle.

WatchChainHair_SM.jpg SOLD - Antique Watch - Watch Chain, Woven Hair
$0.00

**  SOLD   NO  LONGER  AVAILABLE   **

This is a very nice woven hair antique watch chain with a Masonic fob. The braided hair portion is approximately 9 1/2". The findings are gold-filled. This watch chain is in excellent condition.

This chain is an excellent choice for use by the Civil War reenactor. Watch chains were a popular fashion accessory throughout the 19th century. Wristwatches were not invented until around the beginning of WWI, so pocket watches were the norm and most pocket watches had watch chains.

To wear a pocket watch, a gentleman attached the watch to one end of the watch chain and attached the other end of the watch chain to his clothing. The "T" at one end, this end was insterted a vest button and the button would be buttoned. When a gentleman removed the watch to look at the time, if it slipped, the watch would not fall, as the watch chain was fastened to his clothing. At the other end of the  watch chain is a “lobster claw” clasp, the watch was clipped onto this clasp. The watch was then tucked inside the pocket of the vest. Midway on the chain is  the “fob”, a small object to hang from the chain.  The fob would dangle off the chain; it was a masculine fashion statement. For some, a handsome watch chain, pocket watch and fob ensemble might be their most valuable possession. Conspicuously visible, and proudly displayed, a watch/fob/watch chain was a man’s most prominent piece of adornment.

“Hair art”, sometimes called “hair work” or “hair jewelry” was immensely popular in the 19th century. They were often made as tokens of love from hair exchanged between sweethearts, cherished friends, spouses or family members. Hair art could also be a type of a memorial. Known as mourning jewelry, it was made from the hair of someone deceased and worn by a surviving family member or loved one as a token of commemoration.

The height of popularity of hair art in America came during The Civil War. Before leaving home, a soldier might clip a lock of hair and give it to his sweetheart or family member as a keepsake. This snippet might be put into a locket or pin. Most soldiers killed in action were not sent home for burial, so hair was often cut from the deceased and mailed to the families as a memento, along with the deceased’s personal items. It was a common tradition to use this hair to make a piece of mourning jewelry. It may seem morbid to us now to wear something made from a dead person’s hair, but in this era, death was an everyday part of life. "Godey's Lady's Book", a women’s 19th century magazine had numerous articles about hair work and hair jewelry. The following celebrates hair work and is an excerpt from 1860: "Hair is at once the most delicate and last of our materials and survives us like love. It is so light, so gentle, so escaping from the idea of death, that, with a lock of hair belonging to a child or friend we may almost look up to heaven and compare notes with angelic nature, may almost say, I have a piece of thee here, not unworthy of thy being now."
