Battle Rattle |

Rattles had multiple military and non-military uses during the Civil War. Used by watchmen, lighthouse keepers, policemen, firemen they produced NOISE to raise alarm. Battle Rattles were specified in the 1860 Ordnance Instructions for the United States Navy Article 521 Page 152 RATTLES FOR CALLING BOARDERS. A thin wooden spring is attached to the heavy wooden body. The spring's free end rests on the ratchet wheel attached to the handle shaft. When rattle is spun the spring repeatedly snaps against the ratchet wheel producing a VERY LOUD noise. Made from Poplar and Oak woods. The rattle body measures approximately 10 3/4" x 3" x 1 1/2". The handle measures about 8 1/2". The rattle is hand rubbed with linseed oil. Proudly MADE IN USA in the Great State of Idaho. Instock Low Stock. |
