The standard model of brogan worn by a soldier was the Model 1851 Jefferson, a square-toed model with four eyelets and leather laces. This excellent article by Bob Sullivan for Writing with the Quill Pen will get you started. Below are some excerpts:
The Writing Pressure
LIGHT, LIGHT, LIGHT!!! Hold the quill as if writing and make small circles with it on the back of your other hand (Try this without ink. :) ) When you can make slight indentations on your hand without leaving a slight scratch mark, you are using the proper pressure to write. The pressure most of us use to write with today is way, way, too hard to use with a quill.
Use a good calligraphy ink. DO NOT USE INDIA INK WHEN USING A QUILL! India ink has too strong an adhesive quality, and will not flow freely from a quill...Actually, I recommend that you do not use powdered ink when starting out. Go to an art store and ask for calligraphy ink."

C&C Sutlery bar soap does not contain lye. Early bar soap has been called "grandma's lye soap". Soap must be made with alkali, often referred to as "lye". Back in the day when Grandma made soap she didn't have access to a lye calculator so she had to guess how much lye to use in her soap. That often resulted in what is called a "lye heavy" soap. With the use of a modern lye calculator, our handcrafted soap has no lye in the final product. The lye has reacted with the oils completely to result in in a beautiful, pure soap.

This Fife is correct for the Civil War period. It is used by both CS and US forces. The bugle is made of maple with brass ends. It is about 16 1/2"" long.
During the Civil War, the fife was one of the main musical instruments that were a part of the battlefield, and others used in camp. Some regiments had full bands for use in parades and as entertainment away from the battlefield.
The fife was an old instrument, basically a flute with a limited range of notes, and useful on the battlefield because it was pitched so high that its sound carried over many of the sounds of battle.

This is the Indian Wars pistol cartridge pouch for the M1873. Nearly identical to the American Civil War Cap Box, except with US in oval embossed on the flap. This economical cap box features an interior lining, brass finial, 2 belt loops on the back and is sewn in white thread.
Started life as a Civil War pattern pouch, was probably unissued, and was then recycled for use during the Indian Wars era. The originally had a wood block to hold the cartridges, but most troopers took them out so the cartridge box would hold a few more cartridges.
The Civil War Blakeslee Spencer Quick Loader Cartridge Box is designed for the Spencer Carbine. Because of the rapid speed that a Spencer carbine could be fired, a special box needed to be designed to hold cartridges for loading. Erasmus Blakeslee patented this box late in 1864. U.S. Government contracts for over 30,000 boxes were delivered to the War Department but few were used in the Civil War due to time delays of production and distribution.
This box contains 6 tin tubes encased in a bored wood block. The wood block is wrapped in smooth black bridle leather with a hinged leather lid to protect the open tops of the tin tubes from the elements. The box is worn over the shoulder on the left side. The leather shoulder strap attached to the box holds the device close to the trooper's left side. This arrangement allows the soldier to reach across with his right hand, flip open the 'Quickloader' box lid, draw out a single magazine tube filled with seven cartridges and insert the bullets into the stock of the Spencer weapon. The box has an implement pouch just like the originals, include the shoulder sling, and has a belt loop on the back.
Available for BOTH .44-40 ammunition OR .56-50 ammunition. The .44-40 will fit .45 Long Colt ammunition.
The box is available in black leather only and measures approximately 13 inches longs and 2 inches by 3 inches wide.
