This is a St. Louis Depot Mounted Services Jacket produced by the St. Louis Depot, a major supplier of jackets for Trans-Mississippi Federal cavalry and artillerymen during the war.

The jacket has the standard 6-piece body and 2-piece sleeve of the mounted shell jacket, but has some distinctive differences as well. This shell jacket is made from 20 oz Federal (Navy) blue wool, is lined with muslin, and has with an inside pocket. The jacket features an 11 button front (instead of 12) of US Eagle, 3/4" buttons. The jacket has 2 button functional cuffs and 2 buttons on each side of the standing collar and saber belt bolsters (pillows) on the back. The collar trim has SINGLE rows of tape. The collar, sleeve, front edge, bottom, back seams, and bolsters of the jacket are trimmed 3/8" tape denoting branch of service: red for artillery and yellow for cavalry.

The bolsters were set at the bottom of the rear/side seams and were designed to 'bolster' the weight of a saber belt which carried the pistol and saber of a mounted soldier. The mounted services jackets are typically longer than most other Civil War shell jackets as the belt needed ride above the bolsters.

The US Enlisted Musician Shell Jacket is made of 16 oz. Navy Blue Wool with Branch of Service 1/2 inch wool tape on the front, collar and the inverted "V" on the cuff. The Jacket is Single Breasted with a 9 Button Front of Federal Eagle Buttons. The Functional Cuff is closed with 2 small Federal Eagle buttons. All Button Holes are HAND STITCHED. The Jacket is lined in Black Cotton and the sleeves are lined in Natural Cotton Muslin. There is an inside breast pocket.

The bolsters were set at the bottom of the rear/side seams and were designed to 'bolster' the weight of a saber belt which carried the pistol and saber of a mounted soldier. The corps was organized under authority of General Order No. 105, U.S. War Department, dated April 28, 1863. The Invalid Corps of the Civil War period was created to make suitable use in a military or semi-military capacity of soldiers who had been rendered unfit for active field service on account of wounds or disease contracted in line of duty, but who were still fit for garrison or other light duty, and were, in the opinion of their commanding officers, meritorious and deserving. The title "Veteran Reserve Corps" was substituted for that of "Invalid Corps" by General Order No. 111, dated March 18, 1864.

The jacket is made from 20 oz. sky blue wool, is lined with muslin, and has one inside pocket. The jacket has a 12 button front of US Eagle 5/8" buttons. The jacket has 2 button functional cuffs and 1 button on each side of the standing collar. The trimmed epaulettes also feature one button each. The jacket is trimmed with dark blue 1/2" tape. The collar has a single row of double tape. The collar, jacket front edge and bottom, inverted "V" on the sleeves and epaulettes are all trimmed. The jacket back is plain and without bolsters. The sides are slit and trimmed.

The C&C Sutlery US Shell Rockhill & Wilson 72nd, 95th PA Zouave Shell is based off of the original pattern and is made from Navy Blue broadcloth. As per the original specifications, this jacket is trimmed with both 3/8" Red grosgrain tape and 1/8" Red soutache. Ball brass buttons adorn this jacket nicely. 

Rockhill and Wilson Clothiers was a clothing company in Philadelphia who had contract orders with the US Army. One such contract was for the 72nd and 95th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiments.  Both regiments wore Zouave uniforms; Rockhill and Wilson was one of the makers for these jackets. This jacket was cut in the Zouave style, trimmed in red tape and soutache.  A striking feature of this jacket is the sixteen 1/2" ball brass buttons sewn along the trimming, with two additional 1/2" ball brass buttons sewn onto each cuff.  Historically, the 72nd and 95th Pennsylvania Zouave jackets had a collar which was not seen on most other Zouave jackets.  This jacket is appropriate for those wishing to portray 72nd or 95th Pennsylvania Zouave impressions.
