 Our hardtack crates are constructed as authentically as possible and still remain affordable. Unlike ammunition boxes, hardtack crate dimensions were not as critical. So long as the box held 50 pounds of hardtack and was about the right size, it was acceptable. Our hardtack crate features two very destinct details: nail holes for the "just opened" look and green sapling straping. The hardtack box measures 26"L x 17"W x 11"H.

The hardtack crate had some specific construction requirements. Per the specifications from Lt. Col. C.L. Kilburn, the Assistant Commissary General of Subsistence, in his "Notes on Preparing Stores for the United States Army and on the Care of the Same, etc, with a few rules for Detecting Adulterations" printed  in 1863, under Hard Bread it states: The packages should be thoroughly seasoned, (of wood imparting no taste or odor to the bread,) and reasonably tight. The usual method now adopted is to pack 50 pounds net, in basswood boxes, (sides, top and bottom ½ inch, ends 5/8 of an inch,) and of dimensions corresponding with the cutters used, and strapped at each end with light iron or wood. The bread should be packed on its edge compactly, so as not to shake.

Addition specification details were provided in Customs of Service for Non-Commissioned Officers and Soldiers by August Kautz 1864. " When hard bread is put in boxes (the best packages for field transportation), they should be made of fully-seasoned wood, of a kind to impart no taste or odor to the bread, and as far as practicable of single pieces. When two pieces are used in making the same surface, they should be tongued and grooved together.  A box 26 x 17 x 11 inches, exterior measure, is an average box for pilot bread, under the usual circumstances of land transportation. The ends of a box of this size should be made of inch, and the remainder of five-eighths, stuff, the package well strapped with green hickory or other suitable wood." The Civil War soldier's sewing kit is called a 'housewife'. The housewife is made of cloth, is rectangular in shape and can be folded and tied with cloth tie. The “housewife” contains needles, thread, buttons, and patches for mending clothing.

Soldiers were often sent off to service by their mothers, sisters, or sweethearts equipped with such an item, as it was general practice for enlisted men to attend to their own uniforms.

Hand forged tent stakes are made of 3/8" Black Squared Steel Stock,  approximately 11" long. Click on the picture to enlarge.

Few foot soldiers would have carried around the extra weight of steel tent pegs. Steel was more important for other uses than tent pegs so it is likely that even officers may have used wooden tent pegs.  Discarded crates, tree branches and small trees were very common and it was easier to make the tent pegs when needed rather than carry them on a 20 mile march.

This camp-made peg would have been made by the soldier  from a discarded crate.

The head of the peg is about 1.5" and the length about 9.5". There are notches on both sides about 1.5" from the top. To make the the peg easier to drive into the ground you can cut angled points on the tip. And after a few uses, the peg will look wonderfully worn and authentic.

The game of Fox & Geese has been around for several centuries. Both Confederate and Union soldiers suffered from boredom. Reading, letter writing, and games helped pass the time.

In the game of Fox & Geese, the single predator, the Fox, attempts to remove all the other animals, the Geese. While the Geese attempt to surround the Fox and prevent it from moving. If the player controlling the Geese prevents the Fox from moving, he wins. If the player controlling the Fox eliminates enough Geese so that the Fox cannot be surrounded, he wins.

There are 2 versions of Fox & Geese - a 13 Geese version and a 15 Geese version. Each has rule variations. This board has 15 Geese enabling playing of the 13 or 15 Geese version. The game board measures approximately 10" x 5".

This deck is a reproduction of the playing cards originally published in 1863 by M. Nelson. Each card features an engraved portrait of a Union General or statesman of the Union.

This authentic reproduction of a Civil War era poker deck of 55 cards features full-length, single-ended court figures. The cards have square corners as in the original 1864 deck. Per the traditional style, there are no indices in the corners of the cards. The original wrapper contained two 1 cent proprietary tax stamps valid from 1862-1871. The box shows a reproduction of these tax stamps with the hand cancellation dated June 2, 1864.
