Quills_SM.jpg
$2.50

The quill pens are 12"-15" long for writing with ink from ink bottles.

Click on the image for more pictures. Proudly Made in USA.

Here is how you fashion the nib of your quill pen.

This excellent article by Bob Sullivan for Writing with the Quill Pen will get you started. Below are some excerpts:

"The Writing Pressure

LIGHT, LIGHT, LIGHT!!! Hold the quill as if writing and make small circles with it on the back of your other hand (Try this without ink. :) ) When you can make slight indentations on your hand without leaving a slight scratch mark, you are using the proper pressure to write. The pressure most of us use to write with today is way, way, too hard to use with a quill.

The Ink

Use a good calligraphy ink. DO NOT USE INDIA INK WHEN USING A QUILL! India ink has too strong an adhesive quality, and will not flow freely from a quill...Actually, I recommend that you do not use powdered ink when starting out. Go to an art store and ask for calligraphy ink."

BoxHardtackFront_SM.jpg
$69.95

Our hardtack crates are constructed as authentically as possible and still remain affordable. Unlike ammunition boxes, hardtack crate dimensions were not as critical. So long as the box held 50 pounds of hardtack and was about the right size, it was acceptable. Our hardtack crate features two very distinct details: nail holes for the "just opened" look and green sapling strapping. The hardtack box measures 26"L x 17"W x 11"H.

Click on the image for more detailed pictures.

The hardtack crate had some specific construction requirements. Per the specifications from Lt. Col. C.L. Kilburn, the Assistant Commissary General of Subsistence, in his "Notes on Preparing Stores for the United States Army and on the Care of the Same, etc, with a few rules for Detecting Adulterations" printed  in 1863, under Hard Bread it states: The packages should be thoroughly seasoned, (of wood imparting no taste or odor to the bread,) and reasonably tight. The usual method now adopted is to pack 50 pounds net, in basswood boxes, (sides, top and bottom ½ inch, ends 5/8 of an inch,) and of dimensions corresponding with the cutters used, and strapped at each end with light iron or wood. The bread should be packed on its edge compactly, so as not to shake.

Addition specification details were provided in Customs of Service for Non-Commissioned Officers and Soldiers by August Kautz 1864. " When hard bread is put in boxes (the best packages for field transportation), they should be made of fully-seasoned wood, of a kind to impart no taste or odor to the bread, and as far as practicable of single pieces. When two pieces are used in making the same surface, they should be tongued and grooved together.  A box 26 x 17 x 11 inches, exterior measure, is an average box for pilot bread, under the usual circumstances of land transportation. The ends of a box of this size should be made of inch, and the remainder of five-eighths, stuff, the package well strapped with green hickory or other suitable wood." BallotBox_SM.jpg
$29.95

The common ballot box was used for both official and recreational purposes. Companies sometimes elected officers and NCO's or chose soldiers for various work details using the ballot box. When they were bored, soldiers might vote on any number of issues of the day.

Design consisted of a rectangular box with a hinged lid on top and a handle on the back. The open front portion had a small hole in the body of the box. A supply of black and white marbles were kept with the box.

When time to vote, each man was given a black marble and a white marble. Typically the white marbles were assigned "yes" or 'approve" and the black marble were assigned "no" or "disapprove" but they could be assigned other specific votes if needed. To cast the vote, the ballot box was extended toward each man by the handle and the secret vote was cast by placing the selected marble through the hole into the closed box. The marbles were then counted and the vote outcome determined.

The ballot box is made of poplar wood hand rubbed with linseed oil. A ballot box made of oak wood is available for an addition $10.00. Marbles NOT included. Marbles are currently not available.

Lucifers2_SM.jpg

Wood matches in a Civil War period correct box.

A history of the Lucifer Match:

In 1827, John Walker, English chemist and apothecary, discovered that if he coated the end of a stick with certain chemicals and let them dry, he could start a fire by striking the stick anywhere. These were the first friction matches. The chemicals he used were antimony sulfide, potassium chlorate, gum, and starch. Walker did not patent his "Congreves" as he called the matches (alluding to the Congreve's rocket invented in 1808). Walker was a former chemist at 59 High Street, in Stockton-on-Tees, England. His first sale of the matches was on April 7, 1827, to a Mr. Hixon, a solicitor in the town. Walker made little money from his invention. He died in 1859 at the age of 78 and is buried in the Norton Parish Churchyard in Stockton.

In 1829 Samuel Jones saw Walker's "Congreves" and decided to market them, calling his matches "Lucifers". "Lucifers" became popular especially among smokers, but they had a bad burning odor.

In 1855, safety matches were patented by Johan Edvard Lundstrom of Sweden. Lundstrom put red phosphorus on the sandpaper outside the box and the other ingredients on the match head, solving the problem of "phossy jaw" and creating a match that could only be safely lit off the prepared, special striking, surface.

Soap_SM
$1.95 $1.50 On Sale!

ONLY 1 bar remaining!

C&C Sutlery Bar Soap contains no fragrance, detergents, or dyes. The handmade bar soap weighs approximately 2.2 ounces and measures approximately 3" x 1 1/2" x 1" thick. The bar comes wrapped in brown kraft paper and tied with jute twine.

A cotton cloth bag with drawstring for soap storage is available for an additional cost.

To increase bar longevity, keep bar out of standing water. Store unused bar in a dry, dark location.

Click on the image for more pictures.

Ingredients: saponified olive and coconut oils, lard, water. Discontinue use if adverse reaction occurs.

C&C Sutlery bar soap does not contain lye. Early bar soap has been called "grandma's lye soap". Soap must be made with alkali, often referred to as "lye". Back in the day when Grandma made soap she didn't have access to a lye calculator so she had to guess how much lye to use in her soap. That often resulted in what is called a "lye heavy" soap. With the use of a modern lye calculator, our handcrafted soap has no lye in the final product. The lye has reacted with the oils completely to result in in a beautiful, pure soap.

TentPeg_SM.jpg
$2.95

Few foot soldiers would have carried around the extra weight of steel tent pegs. Steel was more important for other uses than tent pegs so it is likely that even officers may have used wooden tent pegs.  Discarded crates, tree branches and small trees were very common and it was easier to make the tent pegs when needed rather than carry them on a 20 mile march.

This camp-made peg would have been made by the soldier  from a discarded crate.

The head of the peg is about 1.5" and the length about 9.5". There are notches on both sides about 1.5" from the top. To make the the peg easier to drive into the ground you can cut angled points on the tip. And after a few uses, the peg will look wonderfully worn and authentic.

The tent peg is made from poplar, not pine, for durability and longevity.
